I have had a so-called career, kind of on the periphery of show business … I took 15 years off to raise my son. I took four years off to see my mom through her final days. I’ve often taken a lot of time off and I think it gives me a different sense of comfort in the world than I would have if I was merely a careerist trying to compete in the system to have a better record than somebody else.

We can do this, the world is still ripening every one of us — even the bad guys, even the guys we don’t like. Babies, elders, bozos and angels — we’re all ripening, is what I think.

For me, the hip word is mutate. We’re ripening all the time.
