Happiness is determined by factors like your health, your family relationships and friendships, and above all by feeling that you are in control of how you spend your time.

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down 'happy'. They told me I didn't understand the assignment, and I told them they didn't understand life.

When one door of happiness closes, another opens, but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one that has been opened for us.

Growth itself contains the germ of happiness.

At least in my case, a very simple, regular, happy life makes for better writing.

I like sad songs. I like paintings that are a little broken. I love the tragic hero. I am always skeptical of anything that is too happy.

If you deliberately plan to be less than you are capable of becoming, then I warn you that you’ll be deeply unhappy for the rest of your life. You will be evading your own capacities, your own possibilities.

It is difficult to get a people to understand something when their salary depends upon their not understanding it.
